Light fingered crooks are costing Yorkshire Water a fortune as thieves strip assets of stainless steel and copper.

If that wasn't bad enough, the risks of pollution are also being increased as pieces of equipment needed for treating waste water have been stolen. In total, this growing criminal activity cost YW around £4 million last year in replacing stolen parts.

Now Yorkshire Water is hitting back, working with Police and security experts to trap the thieves using redDNA™ unique coded Grease.

The RedWeb redDNA™ Grease will be coated on machinery and equipment across selected Yorkshire Water sites as part of a pilot. RedWeb's redDNA™ can only be seen under UV light, but the really clever feature is the redDNA™ tag that allows Police to identify where the thieves have been and the exact assets they have handled.

Yorkshire Water Security Manager Peter Ramsay said:

We have a serious problem with metal theft which has increased because demand from China and the Far East has pushed up world prices.

We have 650 sites across Yorkshire – some are remote, expansive and vulnerable so we are going to pilot RedWeb redDNA™ Grease as part of our strategy to tackle the problem.

As a result of the trial, none of the 10 sites identified for the trial suffered any crimes of theft or criminal damage post deployment of the redDNA™ Grease. A further 120 sites have now taken up on the product.
