Metal theft was daylight robbery

Published on Tue 3 Jun 2008

Bogus workmen have stolen a three-ton metal canopy valued at £5,000 from a garage forecourt in the Teesside village of Horden. The offence took place in broad daylight and witnesses thought the thieves were legitimate workers. Chris Davis, site manager for forecourt owners B&T Wilkinson, said, "The landlord of our next door pub thought whoever it was, was working for the council. They were wearing luminous jackets and had tools. They've probably taken it away to weigh in for scrap."
