Metal thieves steal high-voltage cables

Thieves are risking their lives by throwing chains over electricity cables in an attempt to pull them down and steal the metal. The offenders have cut power to several Suffolk villages three times in the last month alone. Nearly 1,000 metres of cable were stolen in two incidents, after substations were raided to shut down the power. Essex police have formed a team to tackle the problem. "The offences are taking place at night and must involve several people with large vehicles," a police spokesman said.
